My first makeup competition- Illamasqua Distinction in Makeup Artistry Awards 2013

Illamasqua Distinction Makeup Artistry Awards was a huge event in makeup artistry few years ago.

Few reasons I was exited to participate-

One of the judges was Alex Box- that time creative director of Illamasqua, renowned for her creative thinking and makeup concepts.

Secondly this competition was a serious challenge and stepping stone into makeup world.

To get to the live finals you had to submit two images- beauty and creative makeup look.

When I got a call from Illamasqua office saying I got through live finals I was beyond exited as well as petrified as I have never done anything like this before and as a self taught makeup artist at that time I was quite shy and not as confident as I would like.

The theme was “Show us the Future”.

I absolutely love futuristic concepts. As a graduate fashion student I looked into runaways and architecture for inspiration and combined the elements with modern art- cubism.

I really wanted to challenge myself so I created bespoke stick on nail-art for the first time. Sketchbook was a key element to come up with the best concept, and draw ideas and I also created 3D lashes inspired by Origami technique.

I collaborated with hairstylist Anna Romanenkova and she created a bespoke futuristic wig to complete my look.

My key future elements were-

  • 3D makeup

  • No eyebrow look

  • Distorted liner

  • Alien like hair

  • Permanent tattoo style facial ornaments instead of accessories

The competition took place at Bafta Theatre in London, we had to create a look in 1hour live on stage, while people watching and afterwards we had to present it to the judges.

I can honestly say it was one of the most amazing experiences I had in my life, it truly changed my thinking and self believe.

I took a makeup course afterwards and brushed up my new makeup skills, that lead me into working on fantastic projects and clients.

I would always encourage makeup students, enthusiasts, professionals to push yourself even if your unsure and fear the unknown, the feeling of being in uncomfortable situation always brings out new characteristics you never thought you have
